Overview

Inspired by the movement of companies trying to make an impact by eliminating single-use plastics, paying fair living wages, decreasing sugar in snacks, etc., Parsnip seeks to help bring these brands together.

Parsnip connects brands to the partners they need to grow their business and amplify their marketing abilities, including co-marketing partners like event producers and photographers, agency partners, writers and influencers and other brands.

Challenge

Parsnip approached our team at a time when they were manually matching and filtering partners through Airtable. They wanted us to create an interface where Parsnip users were able to search for brands on their own and be able to filter the results based on criteria such as partnership type, certifications and labels.

The core challenge was how we can decrease user friction during the matchmaking process while increasing product scalability for the long-term.

Research

We began to approach the problem by looking at comparative websites with filters to analyze what works well for them. Furthermore, the team looked at different search and filter design patterns to note what elements make them effective.

We also sent out surveys to current Parsnip users to understand how they currently use the website to find potential partnerships.

In the survey, we asked the participants to order the importance of the different filter categories to help inform us about where to prioritize each one.

Define Problems

Information Architecture

With the numerous amount of filtering options available, it became clear that there needed to be some sort of information architecture to organize the content. From the user research results, I decided to order the filter options by the most popular matchmaking options combined with what users prioritize the most when searching for a potential partnership.

Lessons and Takeaways

Designing as a Project Lead

This was my first opportunity leading a project. A large amount of my time and energy shifted from focusing on pushing pixels to scheduling weekly sprint planning meetings, emailing stakeholders, and preparing the team to be as successful as possible. As this was also my first 0-1 project, it gave me an insight on how to manage a successful design project outside from an individual contributor’s point of view.

Integrating a Style Guide

Parsnip worked with another design team to provide a style guide to redesign their website branding. While it was helpful to have a direction to follow, it also provided challenges in terms of using their components within our design thinking and trying to maintaining a cohesive experience throughout the website.
